Dr. Elliot Alpher Speaks About The Rapidly Evolving Field of Dental Sleep Medicine
Washington, D. C. (PRWEB) August 21, 2015 -- On July 27, at the Continuing Dental Education Summer Symposium hosted by the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional & Continuing Studies in Ocean City, MD, Dr. Elliott Alpher, Dr. Oliver C. Roberson, Mr. David Gergen, and Former Congressman Marty Russo, lectured on how dentists can be part of the solution for successful treatment of sleep disorders within the rapidly evolving field of dental sleep medicine. This included the protocols for examination, diagnosis, fabrication of the appropriate appliance, and delivering the appliance.
Dr. Alpher thoroughly illustrated the evolution of airway problems from birth to adulthood and how patients develop their presenting symptoms and signs of sleep and jaw pain disorders. He explained the significant relationship between the temporomandibular joint, the cervical spine and the autonomic nervous system from a dental sleep medicine perspective.
Dr. Roberson provided insight into the relationship between the temporomandibular joint, and how cervical spine disorders and misalignment are treated with Atlas Orthogony. Mr. Gergen, owner of Gergen's Orthodontic Lab spoke on laboratory techniques as well as oral appliances, and Mr. Russo explained the necessity for lobbyists to represent the oral appliance profession by bringing awareness to Congress, and take CPAP alternative therapy to the next level.
The audience included approximately 300 dentists and auxiliary personnel. The four-hour lecture was well received and was followed by a lively Q& A panel discussion. “This symposium gave dental practitioners, especially those just starting out, an opportunity to really learn about therapies available and provide insight on resources they have to explore in order to be successful,” commented Dr. Alpher.
Dr. Elliott Alpher, one of the District’s most experienced specialists for sleep and jaw disorders, on staff at George Washington University Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital, has been known as a leader in the treatment of sleep disorders and jaw pain for 25 years.
