Dr. Esther Babady Discusses the Laboratory and Clinical Benefits of Rapid Blood Culture Diagnostics

However, the ability to diagnosis sepsis is challenging and early recognition is a key component in improving outcomes. Currently, blood culture remains the gold standard for diagnosis but identification of bacterial or fungal pathogens using conventional methods is often delayed and results in the institution of empiric antimicrobial therapy. This leaves clinical microbiology laboratories with fewer options for the rapid identification of pathogens from positive blood cultures as methods vary in complexity, turn-around time to results, number of pathogens identified and costs.

Dr. Babady received a doctorate from the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in biochemistry and molecular biology. She currently serves as the Director of Clinical Operations for the Microbiology Laboratory Service and an Associate attending in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer. Her research interests include rapid diagnosis of infections in immunocompromised hosts and the development and evaluation of the clinical utility of molecular microbiology assays.
