Dr. James E. Shaw, Dr. Laura Schlessinger Highlight Program at California Southern University Graduation
Irvine, California (PRWEB) July 23, 2013 -- California Southern University has announced that Dr. James E. Shaw will deliver the keynote address at the university’s 35th annual commencement ceremony, held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at The Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, California.
Dr. James Shaw, a member of the faculty in the university’s departments of psychology and criminal justice, is a nationally recognized scholar, educator, author and expert witness. His areas of expertise include adolescent violence, life-span development among inner-city youth and gang-related traumatic stress disorder. He is a sought-after speaker on these and many other topics, and has appeared on Good Morning America, the Today Show, CBS News and The O’Reilly Factor, as well as a wide variety of other television and radio shows. He is the author of the groundbreaking book, Jack and Jill, Why They Kill and has been honored by the California legislature for his research and writing on issues impacting inner-city youth and families.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger will be making a special video address to CalSouthern’s graduates. One of the most popular talk show hosts in radio history as well as a best-selling author, “Dr. Laura” is a long-time friend to the university.
In another video presentation, internationally renowned psychotherapist and author Dr. Jeffrey Zeig will receive recognition as honorary “Distinguished Professor” for his contributions to the field of psychology as well as in appreciation of his long-time relationship with CalSouthern.
A special highlight of the commencement ceremony, which is open to the public, will be the presentation of the 2013 CalSouthern Difference Award to Freddie Williams. A graduate of the university’s MA (Psychology) program and a current doctoral student at CalSouthern, Mr. Williams has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds—decades of addiction, an abusive father, poverty, incarceration, homelessness, HIV infection—to not only achieve sobriety and remarkable academic and professional success, but to tirelessly work to heal others’ lives through his innovative clinical work, motivational speaking and advocacy regarding substance abuse issues and HIV education and prevention. His story is as moving and inspirational as it is remarkable.
Members of the media and interested members of the public are invited to attend the CalSouthern Difference Award presentation, held in conjunction with the university’s graduation ceremony. Admission is complimentary. Details and registration information are available online.
