St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) November 27, 2013 -- Castlewood Treatment Center's Dr. Jim Gerber was recently featured on a news segment on Fox 2, St. Louis. Dr. Gerber, who appeared with Castlewood graduate Justin Helfert, spoke about the increase in the number of men who are seeking help for an eating disorder.
Eating disorders are typically thought of as a woman's disease. However, more and more men are now struggling with anorexia, bulimia, and other disorders, but are often too ashamed to come forward to get help. By creating awareness among the public that these disorders can affect men as well as women, more men are able to find the help they need to recover.
Dr. Gerber talked on the segment with John Pertzborn, Fox 2 about causes and treatment of eating disorders. He stated that these conditions start out as a way to get along in life, but they quickly become destructive. Staff at Castlewood utilize a multifaceted approach, implementing a variety of methods to help the client recover. Dr. Gerber explained that individuals must first resolve their issue with food, but in order to fully heal they must also address their underlying issues and learn how to deal with emotions and feelings of low self-esteem.
According to Dr. Gerber, stress is often a contributor to eating disorders. As the holidays approach, many men who are already burdened with an eating disorder find their symptoms get worse at this time of year. "Oftentimes this time of year is stressful for people, and the added stress can add to difficulties with an eating disorder," said Dr. Gerber. "Our treatment center is available for people to call and ask questions so they can explore their options if they think they might have a problem with an eating disorder."
Justin talked in the segment about his time at Castlewood and the way the therapists there helped him overcome his eating disorder. He gives hope to other men who are going through the same struggle. "It gets easier as it goes on," Justin said. "As you deal with underlying issues, those tendencies for eating disorders go away. There is hope. You can have freedom from this."
