Dr. Jonathan Christenbury Predicts Top Vision Correction Trends for 2015

With more than 20 years of experience in laser eye surgery, Dr. Christenbury has experienced a lot of change in the vision correction industry. For 2015, Dr. Christenbury predicts an increase in changes seen over the past few years, especially with respect to early treatment of cataracts and lens implants. Many patients are also choosing permanent vision correction to eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Common solutions include LASIK, Visian ICL and ReSTOR. Younger patients are giving the message, “Why wear glasses at all?”
Early Cataract Surgery - Historically, people with cataracts waited until the problem progressed enough to cause severe vision issues, such as the inability to drive at night, before undergoing cataract surgery. This procedure typically was reserved for adults over the age of 65 and more typically 70s and older. Statistics now show that 65% of people over 50 have some degree of cataracts with that rising to100% of people over 80 years old. Today, Dr. Christenbury sees two new trends: 1) Patients in their 40s and 50s are continuing to have active lifestyles; and 2) Many patients with early cataracts now choose surgery at a much earlier age, sometimes in their 40s, rather than waiting until the condition progresses to a severe state. Dr. Christenbury finds that often patients opt to include a ReSTOR lens implant in order to eliminate the need for bifocals glasses or reading glasses.
ReSTOR Vision Correction Instead of Glasses - LASIK only corrects Myopia, distance vision, and not Presbyopia, which causes the need for reading glasses or bifocals. After age 40, ReSTOR, a multifocal lens implant, corrects distance but also the intermediate and reading distance, which eliminates the need for reading glasses and bifocals. Increasingly, vision correction surgery is becoming the choice of people young and old, with an increase in procedures for those evaluated over the past two years. With more powerful technology, more accurate procedures and the desire to become glasses free, more people are opting to permanently fix their vision problems instead of correcting with glasses or bifocals.
Dr. Christenbury hears many complaints from patients not being able to read not only small print but also their smartphones. They have increased the font size on the phone but still cannot see it. One patient said, “I’m tired of asking my children to read my smartphone for me.” Some of the reasons for this increase in early procedures may come from the advent of wellness programs in today’s workplaces. Also, the fact that individuals are working longer and live more active lifestyles creates a desire to improve quality of life without spectacles.
