Pomona, NY (PRWEB) May 20, 2014 -- Dr. Jonathan Tiger is helping Pomona, NY residents to take action against periodontitis, a highly prevalent, yet seriously overlooked disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, periodontitis, also referred to as gum disease or periodontal disease, affects 64.7 million American adults. Due to these alarming statistics, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) are promoting this public health issue through a campaign that calls for Americans to Love the Gums They’re With.
Gum disease can lead to gum recession and tooth and bone loss as well as a host of other heath complications like diabetes and heart disease. Despite its pervasiveness, many people are unaware of the serious health consequences that can accompany gum disease, resulting in a lack of urgency when it comes to gum care. TV personality Chris Harrison, host of ABC’s dating show, “The Bachelor,” has teamed up with the AAP to launch the Love the Gums You’re With campaign.
Gum disease can be prevented through proactive measures like brushing teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and undergoing an annual periodontal evaluation. The first stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, often manifests as swollen gums that bleed while brushing or flossing. At this stage, the effects of gum disease can still be reversed with a more diligent daily oral hygiene regimen and professional dental cleanings; however, if the infection is allowed to progress, it can cause irreversible damage to the teeth, gums, and supporting bone structures.

Patients should also ask their dentist to make a referral to a periodontist (a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease) for a periodontal evaluation.
