Dr. Larry Benz to Facilitate Special Version of Called to Care Beginning January 2014
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- Evidence In Motion (EIM) is thrilled to announce that Dr. Larry Benz, PT, DPT, OCS, MAPP, and CEO of PT Development (PTD), will be facilitating a live version of EIM’s recently released Called to Care course January 20th – February 28th, 2014. Carmen Maria Romero, PT, and Izetta Slade, PTD’s Director of Performance Training and Development, will also help facilitate the course.
Called to Care is an online course that was designed to shift healthcare away from deeply impersonal care towards an enhanced commitment among caretakers to high quality patient connections with an emphasis on compassion and empathy. The course is based on research conducted as part of Dr. Benz’s recent completion of a Master’s in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. This research showed that a physical therapist’s clinical behavior has the potential to be more empathetic, positive, and compassionate, despite the constraints and burdens of the current health care system.
Additional research by EIM principal Dr. Timothy Flynn, PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT and referenced in Dr. Flynn and Dr. Benz’ recent article and follow-up letter in the peer reviewed Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) will also be incorporated into the course. This article, entitled “Placebo, Nocebo, and Expectations: Leveraging Positive Outcomes,” cites research from over the last decade that defines placebo and nocebo effects as real, psychobiological responses that are foretelling of treatment outcomes.
“Findings indicate that a combination of evidence-based interventions and the framing of the experience in a positive manner by the caretaker can radically change patient encounters,” states Dr. Benz. “Findings also indicate that those who embrace the addition of the placebo to their proverbial ‘tool kits’ have great potential to maximize results.”
To date, more than 150 physical therapists have been trained in Called to Care and are participating in a validated instrument known as the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) measure which documents patients’ feedback on their providers interaction and behavior.
The online course will feature interactive coursework with webinars beginning January 20, 2014 and ending February 28, 2014. Upon completion of the course, participants will earn 11.5 contact hours from the EIM Institute of Health professions. This live version of the course can be purchased for a special holiday price of $199. Additionally, two or more participants from the same organization may register for the program at the reduced price of $175 per person. 10% of all proceeds will be donated to PTHelpforHaiti.org, an organization that provides a sustainable physical rehab clinic in Jacmel, Haiti.
