(PRWEB) February 16, 2018 -- Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero of Dentistry for Children & Adolescents recently hosted a two-day Give Kids a Smile event, and provided disadvantaged children with over $12,000 of free dental care. Dr. Santos-Cordero is an esteemed pediatric dentist serving Sarasota, FL and surrounding areas including Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton. Give Kids a Smile is a volunteer program Dr. Santos-Cordero has been participating in since 2013. The program provides free dental care to children in disadvantaged homes and with limited access to treatment. Dr. Santos-Cordero and her team provided treatments that ranged from oral evaluations and x-rays to treatment of cavities and full restorative dental work.
“Most people are not aware that Pediatric Dental Disease is America’s most common chronic childhood illness. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, dental cavities, gum disease and other oral conditions can cause millions of children pain so severe that it affects their ability to eat, sleep and learn, communicate and thrive,” says Dr. Santos-Cordero. “Our goal has always been to provide comprehensive dental treatment, not just dental screenings. That’s why our event lasts two days.”
Sharing in her vision of giving back to their community, Dr. Santos-Cordero partnered with her husband, Dr. Francisco Marcano, an esteemed general dentist. Their dental team also donated time to provide these two days of free dental care. A team effort, Manatee Technical College dental assistant students assisted and observed during the Give Kids a Smile event while nurses in the Sarasota-Manatee area helped identify underprivileged children in need of dental care. These children received oral health exams and treatment for cavities.
Children are encouraged to start visiting the dentist by age one, or as soon as their baby teeth first begin to erupt. Dr. Santos-Cordero stresses that children who receive routine dental care from a pediatric dentist have improved oral health, better at-home dental care, and are less frightened of the dentist as they age. When children have cavities or other oral concerns, it can become difficult or painful for them to eat. “Nutritional deficiencies during childhood can interfere with memory, problem solving and the decision-making process,” Dr. Santos-Cordero states.
