Dr. Marta Katalenas Begins Flu Vaccine Research Study at Pediatric Center of Round Rock
Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 03, 2013 -- The Pediatric Center of Round Rock and Tekton Research, an Austin TX medical research facility, have begun a flu vaccine clinical trial that is designed to find more effective vaccines to protect families from the influenza virus.
Families in the Austin metro area are encouraged to apply to participate in the clinical study at The Pediatric Center of Round Rock which will provide all study-related flu vaccines and office visits at no cost and financial compensation for participants that complete all required office visits.
The Texas Department of State Health Services recently confirmed 18 influenza-associated pediatric deaths in Texas for the 2012-2013 season. The flu season typically runs from October through May with most cases in Texas occurring in December, January, and February as families spend more time indoors and the opportunities for spreading germs increase. Texas laboratories reported 3,270 cases of influenza to the DSHS in the 2011-2012 flu season.
Dr. Marta Katalenas, pediatrician and owner of The Pediatric Center of Round Rock, encourages parents to schedule appointments for the entire family to get the flu vaccinations at the same time. “Our clinic will even provide vaccines to the grandparents of our existing patients in order to protect everyone from the dangers of the flu,” says Dr. Katalenas, stating that the elderly and infants are particularly vulnerable to hospitalization and death from flu-related complications.
Infants and children over the age of 6 months should be scheduled to receive the flu vaccine as soon as possible which will help avoid missed school days and workdays by parents. Dr. Katalenas reminds parents to avoid the stressful and painful consequences of each family member getting the flu which can affect the family for a month or longer as each member gets sick. “Children can get behind at school and a parent’s ability to work and provide financially for their family can be severely impacted,” says Dr. Katalenas.
