Dr. Michael’s Farzam’s Fall 2016 Health Tip: Don’t Wait for the Flu to Strike; Get Vaccinated Now
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2016 -- With kids back in school and the 2016 fall season very much upon us, board certified physician Dr. Michael Farzam of House Call Doctor Los Angeles tells us that one question he hears fairly often at this time of year is whether or not it’s still too early to get a flu vaccination. “The answer is that right now is really the best time to get a shot. That’s because it’s important to make sure that you get vaccinated before the flu season really begins – which may be sooner than anyone thinks. You want to take advantage of your earliest opportunity to get a flu shot because it’s all too easy to find yourself putting it off so long that it’s almost too late to benefit,” says Dr. Farzam.
Dr. Farzam adds that most people do not realize that it typically takes roughly two weeks after being vaccinated for individuals to receive all of the immunity a vaccine can provide, another reality that should encourage the public to get their shots sooner rather than later. “This year, the CDC [Center for Disease Control] says that we’re looking at as many as four separate flu strains and, as always, the advice is that, with a few exceptions, everyone older than six months should be vaccinated against them. Every year, I talk to people who believe they don’t need a flu vaccine, but the reality is that the flu is a potentially deadly disease for lots of older people and children, as well as for people with health problems. The more of us who get the vaccine, the less it will likely spread and lead to serious illness or worse for some people,” says Dr. Farzam.
Dr. Farzam adds that, on a more selfish level, even for younger, healthy individuals who are unlikely to suffer permanent damage from a nasty flu bug, there’s no reason to risk being put out of commission for as long as two weeks or more. “If you’ve even found yourself with a bad flu over the holidays, you know this is something that’s worth going out of your way to avoid. Yes, there are some people who don’t think they need the shots, but many of these people may never have really had a bad flu as adults. It’s no fun,” says Dr. Farzam.

He also adds, regardless, that people should make sure they and their love ones get a shot at the earliest opportunity.
