Dr. Robert Harshbarger lll, Pharmacist Participates in July’s Bone Density Health Screening Forum in Kingsport, TN
Kingsport, TN (PRWEB) July 24, 2014 -- “Osteoporosis, or thinning bones, can result in painful fractures. Risk factors for osteoporosis include aging, being female, low body weight, low sex hormones or menopause, smoking, and some medications. Prevention and treatment include calcium and vitamin D, exercise, and osteoporosis medications. This is something I plead with my patients about on a daily basis, what to work on and take care of today, to have positive outcomes tomorrow. This is yet another State and Federal Healthcare concern that some of my patients don’t have to be sentenced for a lifetime of problems,” said Dr. Harshbarger.
“In the United States, more than 40 million people either already have osteoporosis or are at high risk due to low bone mass. Strong bones are important for your health. A bone mineral density (BMD) test is the best way to measure your bone health,“ stated Robert Harshbarger lll, Pharmacist
*Low bone mass that is not low enough to be osteoporosis is sometimes called osteopenia. Causes of low bone mass include family history, not developing good bone mass when you are young, and certain conditions or medicines. Not everyone who has low bone mass gets osteoporosis. But everyone with low bone mass is at higher risk for getting it.
If you have low bone mass, there are things you can do to help slow down bone loss. These include eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D and doing weight-bearing exercise such as walking, bowling or dancing. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medicines to prevent osteoporosis.
