Traditional methods for treating periodontal disease have been scaling and root planing or “deep cleaning” followed by periodontal surgery. The results of the root planing procedure are evaluated by how the root surface feels and not by observation. The clinician essentially works blindly. Research has consistently shown that following this treatment 50 percent of the root surface still has bacterial deposits and calculus. Healing will not occur in the presence of calculus. Therefore, in the past, surgery was recommended to gain access to and visualize these deposits on the root. Through the use of Perioscopy Dr. Watkins and his team can now visualize and remove the deposits on the root without surgery.
According to Dr. Watkins, perioscopy provides a higher level of care. The perioscope not only provides real time viewing of the root at a 48 times magnified image, but also allows the clinician to actually visualize the root surface during the root planing procedure as the enhanced image is displayed on the video screen.
