Dr. Speron Explains How Genes Inherited from Mom May Influence How Fast You Age

The researchers of Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Max Planck Institute of Biology for Aging in Germany have recently given an overall different viewpoint for aging. The researchers believe that the genetic factor one inherits from their mothers play a significant role in aging.
The 'inherited' effect was derived from studies in mice. Looking into this issue, researchers have discovered that damaged DNA in the mitochondria (the powerhouse of most cells), was a significant factor in aging. This is due to such cellular activity that partially controls the rate of aging. For the researchers to determine the effects of mitochondrial DNA or mDNA damage on aging, the examiners bred laboratory mice with variable degrees of DNA damage. They continued to estimate their aging rates by measuring aspects of fitness such as fertility, red blood cell count and weight.
As to the inheritance connection, mitochondrial DNA contains genes only from mothers. Mitochondrial DNA differs from the DNA that resides in the nucleus of cells, which comes from both parents. Therefore, if the mother passes on damaged or mutated DNA, then this could trigger premature aging.
“If we inherit mDNA with mutations from our mother, we will age much quicker,” notes Dr. Sam Speron, board certified plastic surgeon and consumer advocate. “The mitochondrion containing its own DNA changes more than the DNA in the nucleus. This change has a substantial impact on the aging process.”
