Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published in the Denistry website on 29 March about how private dental practices are increasing in profit. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu said, “Six hundred practices took part in a survey which was conducted throughout the United Kingdom, many of which showed an increase in profits while NHS practices saw a decline in their profit margins. There are so many factors associated with this, which has resulted in private and NHS practices being on a par in terms of profit margins last year.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “NHS dental practices have usually had the upper hand in the UK because their fees are considerably less than private practices. But there are a number of factors which have come into play, which has caused a significant shift in patients moving across to the private sector of the industry. Prices and expenses have continued to rise, which has resulted in the private sector having more flexibility and the ability to turn a higher profit than the NHS practices which have fixed contract values with little scope for expansion.
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “It is easier for the private dental practices to work their expenses into their budgets, often with lower costs than the NHS practices; this has resulted in them enjoying an improved profit over the NHS practices. Private dental treatment has also increased in demand over recent years with a host of treatments, which are not available through the NHS, such as tooth whitening, dental implants and other services. While the prices are higher for patients visiting private dental practices, usually there are shorter waiting times and a wide range of services. Patients are looking for ways to improve their smiles and are turning to private practices over their regular NHS dentist, which has helped with the increase in profit over the past year.”
