Dr Tariq Drabu Warns Patients about the Link between Gum Disease and Asthma
(PRWEB) April 28, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is a top dentist and specialist oral surgeon in the Manchester area. He is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services for NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. Dr Drabu was one of the youngest dentists to graduate in the United Kingdom and is an active mentor and tutor to postgraduate dentists in oral surgery.
Dr Tariq Drabu was talking about an article published in the Dentistry Today website on how gum disease may result in a higher risk of asthma. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu said, “Gum disease is a serious problem which is being seen in adult patients throughout the country. In most cases, patients aren’t even aware they have a problem until they start to experience pain. So many patients only visit their dentist when they are in pain, which means that we are not able to catch these problems early on; this is why it’s so important for patients to keep their regular check-up at their dental surgeries, so problems such as this can be caught and treated early on.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “There has been a link reported between gum disease and asthma in patients. This is not the only cause and lifestyle and overall health were taken into consideration when conducting the research. Gum disease is treatable and the sooner it is treated the better for the patient. Gum disease starts as a simple gingivitis, which can be easily cured. When left it can become more serious, leading to periodontal disease, which when ignored may result in tooth loss.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “The research conducted involved over two hundred patients, it resulted in one hundred and thirteen of these patients being diagnosed with asthma. The research concluded with a result that patients with gum disease are five times more likely to end up with asthma. Even though asthma is a respiratory disease, the results speak for themselves. This is why it is so important that patients take care of their teeth and gums. Most patients don’t realise the impact oral health has on their overall well-being.”
