Dr Tariq Drabu Warns Patients on the Use of Lidocaine Solutions for Teething Pain in 2014
(PRWEB) July 11, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is a Manchester born and educated dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He was one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Dr Drabu received his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is now the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice. Dr Drabu is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his busy schedule to mentor and tutor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.
Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published by the American Dental Association on the 26 June 2014 on the prescription of lidocaine solutions for teething pain. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu said, “Many patients turn to pharmacies for assistance when their baby or young child can’t sleep at night due to teething pain. The parents are desperate to reduce the amount of pain their child is in and help them find relief. This is completely understandable, but the American Dental Association have advised that the FDA are warning against the use of prescribed lidocaine solutions for teething pain.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say “On the 26 June 2014 the FDA announced that oral viscous lidocaine solutions should not be prescribed for children or babies with teething pain. There are a number of risks associated with too much of the substance in younger children, leading to seizures, heart problems and even brain injuries.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “The FDA reviewed twenty two case reports this year which led to the hospitalisation of young children and babies. Out of the twenty two case reports, six resulted in death in children aged five months to three and a half years old. The FDA has recommended that parents use the American Academy of Paediatrics recommendations on treating teething pain, which can be as simple as using a chilled teething ring to provide relief. As dentists I believe we should examine all children within six months of them receiving their first tooth, we can then take the time to advise parents on the dangers of using lidocaine treatments for teething pain and provide them with recommendations which are safe and effective.”
