Dr. Tovia Martirosian Smith Joins Virginia Women’s Center’s Pelvic Health and Continence Institute
Richmond, VA (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- Virginia Women’s Center, the full-service women’s health care provider with seven locations throughout Central and Eastern Virginia, welcomes urogynecologist Dr. Tovia Martirosian Smith to its staff. Dr. Smith joins long-time Virginia Women’s Center urologist Dr. Lonny Green and gynecologists Dr. Elizabeth Roberts and Dr. Louis Thompson to create the Pelvic Health and Continence Institute at Virginia Women’s Center, just launched this spring. While Virginia Women’s Center has always offered urology services, the Pelvic Health and Continence Institute was created as an extension of these offerings. The four physicians that make up the Institute will work alongside the practice’s OB-GYNs to care for women whose qualities of life are being affected by bladder and pelvic health issues.
“Dr. Smith brings to Virginia Women’s Center an expertise that will greatly benefit our Pelvic Health and Continence Institute,” says Brenda Burgess, Virginia Women’s Center Administrator. “Her knowledge and experience allows us to expand our services for women struggling with incontinence, overactive bladders, pelvic prolapse and more.”
After thirteen years at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Dr. Smith chose to attend Yale University to pursue two of her passions: medicine and field hockey. Following graduation she returned to Virginia to attend medical school at UVA, where she pursued her residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Smith furthered her specialization by completing a three-year fellowship in Urogynecology, or Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
While medicine may have been a natural path for Dr. Smith¬–both of her parents worked in medicine–choosing to build her practice in Richmond was an intentional choice. “Richmond is a great town for medicine,” said Dr. Smith. “With so many hospitals and a very strong academic center, it ensures that through collaboration and competition, the best medicine is being provided for the population.”
Through non-surgical approaches and technologies like the minimally invasive daVinci® Surgical System, Dr. Smith and her colleagues are able to completely reconstruct the pelvic floor for women who suffer from pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence. Dr. Smith is also skilled in repairing fistulas and complications from third and fourth degree tears following vaginal childbirth. Many women do not discuss these sensitive but treatable symptoms with their doctors or loved ones. The four physicians are passionate about giving women time and space to discuss their symptoms as well as educate women on their conditions and treatment options.
