Bloomington, IN (PRWEB) January 18, 2016 -- As Indiana Limestone Company’s Thin Veneer natural stone continues to gain in construction popularity across North America, an important supporting system is also seeing ever wider use. Drainable two-ply systems with weep screeds at the foot of the wall, available through independent vendors, safeguard against water damage within building walls.
Traditional full-bed thickness masonry allows for airspace between the stone and the structure’s external wall, providing drainage for moisture protection. The supporting structures for Thin Veneer stone mean that a different drainage system is needed. Just as with full-bed thickness stone, drainage is critically important with Thin Veneer walls.
“Drainable two-ply systems create separation between the back side of the veneer structure and the exterior surface of the building wall,” said Ed Ring, president of Edwards Stone, Roca, Neb. “Water passing down the drainable system to the lower part of the wall reaches the weep screeds at ground level.” Holes in the screeds allow water to drain away to the exterior, removing moisture rapidly from the wall structure and avoiding water-related damage to wall structures.
"Twenty years ago, drain mat systems were not commonly used in exterior wall applications,” said Dan Ouellette, Indiana Limestone sales manager. “Today, with the improvement of building materials technology and their ability to manage moisture, rain screens are widely used and accepted.”
Drainage systems are available for both the Berkshire and Rockford Thin Veneer stone products from Indiana Limestone. For more information on the use of drainable two-ply systems, please call ILCO at (800) 457-4026.
