DriverCheck Reveals Most Dangerous Driving Behaviors In 2015 Study
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 09, 2015 -- Improper lane change was the highest ranked unsafe driving behavior on North American roadways in the first quarter of 2015 according to a study developed by DriverCheck, Inc. The study was compiled from thousands of driving observations concerning commercial vehicles received from motorists and pedestrians in the US and in Canada.
Complaints concerning improper lane change accounted for 37% of the top five complaints, which are as follows:
1. Improper Lane Change 37%
2. Unlawful Speed 24%
3. Dishonor Right of Way 15%
4. Failure to Stay in Lane 12%
5. Tailgating 12%
“Improper lane changes are often attributable to impatience and/or distracted driving,” says David Densford, DriverCheck’s Operations Manager, who oversaw the study. “Eighty percent of collisions are caused by driver actions and behaviors—not from improper training or faulty equipment. Identifying those at-risk behaviors and changing them before they cause collisions is vitally important.”
The study combined data from more than a thousand companies monitored by DriverCheck. Most were not over-the-road transportation companies but were service based or local delivery businesses whose drivers operate straight trucks, pickups, and vans. “These are often employees hired for their technical or other skills but who frequently drive a branded company vehicle, often filled with equipment or passengers,” says Densford.
“The motorists’ concerns on which the study was based are relayed to the drivers’ supervisors or managers within minutes so that they can be quickly and appropriately counseled to avoid future at-risk behavior”, says Tom O’Connell, National Accounts Manager for DriverCheck. “This is not a punitive action against the driver,” he adds. “The goal is to change unsafe driving actions and behaviors before they cause loss of life and reduced profits.”
