Drug Recall Attorney Jeffrey D. DeCarlo Weighs In on FDA Warning about Sodium Phosphate Laxative Products
Miami, FL (PRWEB) January 27, 2014 -- Commenting on a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration report about the dangers of over-the-counter sodium phosphate laxative products, drug recall attorney Jeffrey D. DeCarlo of the Law Office of Jeffrey D. DeCarlo, P.A., said today he was not surprised to read the warning and has experience handling cases involving other oral sodium phosphate products in his office.
DeCarlo commented on an FDA safety announcement (FDA warns of possible harm from exceeding recommended dose of over-the-counter sodium phosphate products to treat constipation,” Jan. 8, 2014). According to the announcement, a number of over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives have been found to have serious and potentially fatal side effects when warnings on the “Drug Facts” label are not followed or when there are certain coexisting health conditions.
Jeffrey D. DeCarlo said, “We have been actively litigating claims across the country against manufacturers of sodium phosphate bowel cleansers since 2005. These bowel cleansers were linked to a serious form of kidney damage. While this recent FDA report is alarming, I am not surprised to read that over-the-counter sodium phosphate drugs used to treat constipation can cause serious harm to the kidneys and heart and even death. Similar warnings have been issued since 2001.”
According to an FDA consumer update about the issue, sodium phosphate-based laxatives, used to treat constipation, have been associated with dozens of reports of serious side effects. These side effects include potentially irreversible damage to the heart and kidneys and have led to 13 deaths, including one child, according to the FDA.
According to federal regulators, adults over the age of 55 and children with certain health conditions should consult with a health care professional before using these products. Furthermore, the FDA also warned that those using drugs that affect how the kidneys or heart work, such as diuretics, fluid medicines, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, should consult with a doctor before beginning treatment with a sodium phosphate laxative.
“If you or someone you know has experienced harmful side effects as a result of sodium phosphate laxatives, you should discontinue treatment and seek medical attention immediately,” DeCarlo said. “Along with medical treatment, you should seek the advice of legal counsel. Injuries from dangerous drugs can affect victims and their families emotionally, physically and financially. A good attorney can protect the rights of victims and families.”
According to the FDA, signs of a bad reaction to sodium phosphate can range from a failure of a rectal dose to achieve the desired results to symptoms of kidney injury such as drowsiness, sluggishness, decreased amount of urine, or swelling of the feet, ankles, and legs.
