Drug Rehab For Women Destination Hope Expands Eating Disorders Program
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (PRWEB) August 31, 2013 -- An eating disorder study conducted at the University of Sydney, University of London and University of Chicago suggests that a shift in traditional methods of treatment for eating disorders can have a major impact on recovery. The first study to look at evidence based treatment for anorexia nervosa, the study concluded that a shift from weight management to include cognitive behavioral therapy can improve a patient’s chances for high treatment retention. In light of new information, Destination Hope: The Women’s Program, a nationally recognized gender specific mental health treatment and drug rehab for women facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is expanding their eating disorders program to incorporate new treatment methods.
The study, published in medical journal Psychological Medicine was the first randomized clinical trial for chronic anorexia nervosa. Results of the multi-national study noted that changing the goals for eating disorder treatment can affect the outcome. Although this particular study focused on anorexia nervosa, medical professionals are exploring the possibilities that the results could apply to most categories of eating disorders. Instead of focusing exclusively on weight gain, this study focused on a comprehensive treatment program. Medical professional and clients worked together to establish treatment goals that emphasized improved quality of life and facilitated social adjustment. This comprehensive and holistic approach is similar to existing approach at Destination Hope’s drug rehab for women program that deal with other behavioral health problems, such as addiction and substance abuse.
“Traditionally, eating disorders treatment focused on a client’s physical health,” said behavioral expert and drug rehab for women founder Ben Brafman. “While this is an important part of treatment, we also need to look at the root causes of an eating disorder. Our expanded programs aim to help women recover mentally and emotionally as well as physically.”
Destination Hope: The Women’s Program offers a specialized treatment program for clients with an eating disorder. Clients have weekly meetings with a nutritionist and participate in twice-weekly group therapy sessions that focus on self-esteem, body image, and cognitive interventions. They also undergo individual coaching to educate them and address eating disorder traits and promote overall recovery.
“We really want to give women the support they need to overcome their eating disorder and transition back into their lives,” said Brafman. “Alcohol and drug rehab for women and eating disorder treatment is about ongoing recovery, not just achieving specific goals while completing a treatment program.”
Women learn the tools to help them lead a healthy life after treatment, including hands-on lessons in nutrition and food preparation. Clients are taken grocery shopping separate from the rest of the group, where they can practice applying the skills they’ve learned.
“The more real-world experience we can provide, the better,” said Brafman. “It takes practice to use what you’ve learned during treatment for eating disorders. Support is a big part of recovery, both in and out of treatment. The stronger our treatment program, the better the individual results.”
