Dry Eye Sufferers Can Find Relief at Bellevue LASIK and Cataract with Breakthrough LipiFlow® Treatment
Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) July 10, 2014 -- Bellevue LASIK and Cataract today announced the availability of LipiFlow®, a breakthrough treatment for dry eye sufferers. LipiFlow, from TearScience, treats the root cause of the most common form of dry eye disease, called Evaporative Dry Eye. This type of dry eye occurs when oil glands located in the eyelid do not secrete the oil required to protect the water portion of the eyes’ tears from evaporating too quickly.
Kent Leavitt, MD, owner and surgeon at Bellevue Lasik and cataract explains “We have seen a dramatic increase in the occurrence of Evaporative Dry Eye Disease due to the change in our visual tasks over the past decade. With prolonged use of computers, tablets, phones and similar technology our blink rates have diminished which exacerbates the Dry Eye problem.”
LipiFlow uses directed heat and gentle pulsatile pressure to unblock obstructed Meibomian (oil) glands located in the eyelids. By unblocking these glands during a 12-minute in-office procedure, LipiFlow allows the Meibomian glands to resume their natural production of oily lipids needed for a healthy tear film. LipiFlow was developed as a result of 30 years of research and collaboration with more than 50 scientists and professionals and millions of dollars of investment.
Bellevue LASIK and Cataract is a local comprehensive ophthalmology practice that focuses on providing the highest quality vision care using the safest in proven technology. This practice was recently voted the best eye care facility in 425 magazine. Bellevue LASIK and Cataract is among the first clinics to offer the LipiFlow treatment in the greater Seattle region.
“We are proud to offer LipiFlow, a safe, effective treatment for our dry eye patients,” said Kent Leavitt, MD. “Our practice is committed to using the most advanced technology to help our patients achieve ocular comfort and optimal vision. LipiFlow provides the technological leap in dry eye treatments that the eye care industry has been waiting for.”
TearScience’s assessment and treatment devices include the LipiView® Ocular Surface Interferometer and the LipiFlow ® Thermal Pulsation System. LipiView provides detailed digital images of a dry eye patient’s tear film for the physician to assess the lipid layer. LipiView is used by physicians in conjunction with a dry eye questionnaire and a Meibomian gland evaluation to determine if a patient suffers from Evaporative Dry Eye. LipiView also helps identify if the patient is a partial blinker, which may negatively impact the spread of oils across the eye’s surface. LipiView, a new dry eye screening device, helps the physician gain unprecedented insight into patients’ disease. It helps the patient visualize their tear film and better understand why they feel symptomatic.
Evaporative Dry Eye Disease, which causes eyes to feel dry, irritated, gritty, and may even cause blurred vision or sensitivity to sunlight, is a chronic, progressive disease that may worsen over time. Evaporative Dry Eye differs from Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye, where the body is not able to produce adequate moisture to keep the eyes lubricated and is typically treated with pharmaceuticals like Restasis.
Dry Eye patients should undergo a complete evaluation to determine the type of dry eye they have. In TearScience’s multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical study, 79 percent of patients reported an improvement in overall dry eye symptoms within four weeks of a single LipiFlow treatment.
