From Dwayne Hornbeck, author of “Sweeter Than Honey: A Year of Daily Devotions,” comes a new novel about rural life in the mid to upper 1940s in Southern Arkansas. HOSSFLY, THAT’S ME! follows the fictional coming of age story of a young boy who is forced to grow up, deal with a broken home and handle problems like an adult. While Hornbeck’s novel addresses readers of all ages, offering valuable life lessons, it specifically empowers young people to overcome life’s challenges.

The tale is set in Southern rural Arkansas, close to a Wildlife Refuge. The small town of Prairie Gem is the county seat. Here unfolds the story of Hossfly, an 11-year-old boy, abandoned by his mother at age two, who is struggling to cope with life without her. The feeling that he must be blamed for her leaving haunts him every day. His Papa tries to be a good father, but he is also overwhelmed by her sudden disappearance. Hossfly’s adventures lead him to trouble with a smuggling group and ends with Papa being charged with murder.

Hornbeck cleverly injected his story with countless valuable lessons. As young readers identify with Hossfly, they will learn how to fight fear and overcome disappointments and loneliness. They will understand that every decision is connected to a consequence, whether good or bad, and that happiness comes from inner peace when they do the right thing. They will begin to see that being poor in material things is not the most important issue in life. To live right and make good moral decisions is the path to happiness.

With its realistic, down-to-earth, lesson-filled storyline, daring adventures and tons of surprises, HOSSFLY, THAT’S ME! aims to captivate young readers and empower them to succeed in life despite all odds. It also speaks to adults to make them aware of the various needs of young people and their responsibility toward them. Hornbeck has indeed translated his sincere desire, to write with honesty, clarity, a sprinkle of humor and mystery, into one memorable tale for readers from all walks of life. There is truly much to learn from rural life.
