HOSSFLY, THAT’S ME! follows the fictional coming of age story of a young boy who is forced to grow up, deal with a broken home and handle problems like an adult. The tale is set in Southern rural Arkansas, close to a Wildlife Refuge. The small town of Prairie Gem is the county seat. Here unfolds the story of Hossfly, an 11-year-old boy, abandoned by his mother at age two, who is struggling to cope with life without her. The feeling that he must be blamed for her leaving haunts him every day. His Papa tries to be a good father, but he is also overwhelmed by her sudden disappearance. Hossfly’s adventures lead him to trouble with a smuggling group and ends with Papa being charged with murder.
Hornbeck cleverly injected his story with countless valuable lessons. As young readers identify with Hossfly, they will learn how to fight fear and overcome disappointments and loneliness. Dwayne Hornbeck is a country boy from De Witt, Ark., who grew up with a vivid imagination. He was educated at Prairie Gem, De Witt schools, Ark. Tech and Ozark Christian College. His articles have been published in several magazines. Now, the dream of publishing a book has come true. “Hossfly, That’s Me,” is the first one.
