In her new book, “The Hummer and the Hummed,” author Sister María del Sagrado Corazón compares God to a hummingbird. Christians yearn to dwell in the presence of God, yet this is not an easy undertaking. Much like catching a glimpse of a hummingbird as it hovers above a flower or feeder, the author writes, feeling a connection to God can be fleeting, yet at the same time, it changes Christians forever. Sister María del Sagrado Corazón (María of the Sacred Heart) has been a member of the Dominican order in West Springfield, Mass., since 1964. She has written several books and articles and has taught lessons about the Psalms. Sister Maria was given a hummingbird feeder, which drew a hummingbird to the abbey’s garden. It began to visit frequently. When the bird wasn’t there, Sister Maria yearned for its presence again.
