The hydro rate hike is set to take effect starting May 1. In a standard household, the average customer bill will go up by $2.83, which is $33.96 for an entire year. Peak hour rates have also increased, with the cost to use electricity during these times becoming 13.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. The increase in hydro is particularly concerning following the 40% increase in natural gas in Ontario that took effect on April 1 of this year. Marrano notes that the best times to try and use high-voltage items are overnight, between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.; this will reduce consumption costs by almost half. With peak hours for the summer being between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., consumers should try their best to work outside of these times if they hope to save money.
“Another way for consumers to save is by ensuring their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are in good working condition. Combine that with other maintenance methods, such as following suggested thermostat settings, and homeowners can keep their energy costs down,” Marrano concludes. “Homeowners with older systems should consider replacing them, as newer systems can be as high as 98.5% efficient compared to older units, which are often around 80%. Sometimes an HVAC system may need upgrading, and it’s better to handle that now because it will save consumption costs in the long run.”
