Ear, Nose and Throat Practice in Atlanta Offering New Sleep Apnea Treatments

The Atlanta Institute for ENT is at the forefront of offering minimally invasive alternative treatments for patients who have trouble using or are not candidates for a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious medical disorder that is seen more often in men than in women. Sleep apnea refers to a condition where obstructions in the nasal and throat passages make it extremely difficult to breathe. Many patients mistakenly confuse their sleep apnea disorder with severe snoring. However, snoring only occurs when the normal airway is narrower than average. When there is a genuine obstacle that prevents air from entering the lungs, sleep apnea occurs. There are many factors that could contribute to patients developing sleep apnea, including: being overweight, having a large neck, high blood pressure, narrowed airways, chronic congestion of the nose, smoking or drinking excessively, diabetes and more.

The tongue is often the obstacle preventing air from passing through the nose and throat, therefore this procedure places a sling underneath the floor’s lining in the mouth. This sling is anchored to the jawbone, and prevents the tongue from descending into the airway while patients sleep.
Patients who are unsure if they have sleep apnea disorder are encouraged to fill out the “Stop Bang Questionnaire.” This questionnaire asks patients about their sleeping habits and can help determine whether or not they suffer from sleep apnea.
