The investment philosophy espoused is “dislocation equals value” meaning that something has to be trading at the wrong price in order for someone to take advantage of the opportunity. Trading styles are presented to answer three questions:

3. How to manage capital and control losses when you are wrong
Gurevich focuses on his own personal trading advantages rather than those of others; namely, an understanding of the forces that drive successful trades, ridding a portfolio of inferior trades and isolating superior ones. Gurevich’s strategies tend to be “economically agnostic” and oriented towards long-term horizons.

In the book, Gurevich has applied a rigorous set of strategic principles to determine how to select superior trades. The author lays out his own views and strategies using multiple charts and real world examples; presenting a way to think about the dominance of trades and the interactions of asset classes. Gurevich unravels some of the aspects of financial market logic that can be confusing; the metaphor he uses is “every salmon is a fish, but not every fish is a salmon.” He argues that what people think of intuitively is not the same as mathematical causality; that timing and necessity are also important dimensions of causality.
Gurevich focuses in his book on the years he outperformed as a global macro trader, most notably 2002 and 2014, as well as on the challenging years such as 2004 and 2007. The author goes on to outline some of the shifts that are occurring in 2015. Nowadays, Gurevich is particularly interested in the impact of China on the rest of the world, including the effects of a currency devaluation.
