Edgewater Computer Systems Awarded CANIC Program by the Department of National Defence to Certify Extended 1553 (E1553®) for Broad Use in Avionics Systems

(Edgewater) is pleased to announce that the Department of National Defence (DND) has awarded Edgewater a multi-million dollar program to complete airworthiness certification of its flagship Extended 1553 (E1553®) network interface technology.
Following the successful integration, demonstration and test of its E1553® network interface card (NIC) on the CH-146 Griffon helicopter under the previously announced Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program (CICP) program (news release dated July 19, 2012), Edgewater has been awarded the Certified Airworthy Network Interface Card (CANIC) program with the Department of National Defence (DND) to certify its E1553® Network Interface Card (NIC) to DND’s required Design Assurance Levels (DALs) under DO-178B and DO-254.
“This is possibly the most important development in the history of Extended 1553,” said Greg Fielding, Vice President of Edgewater. “Completing the certification of Edgewater’s E1553® NIC to meet DND’s stringent airworthiness requirements opens the door to the broad deployment of Extended 1553 across multiple airborne platforms, world-wide.”
Extended 1553 has been demonstrated on both fixed and rotary wing platforms to provide substantial reductions in both cost and time to integrate and deploy capabilities requiring increased data throughput (capacity) for capabilities such as video, imagery and radar. Extended 1553 adds hundreds of times of increased, deterministic data handling capacity on the existing data bus networking infrastructure on the vast majority of airborne platforms without requiring any changes to the existing network infrastructure. Extended 1553 operates in parallel with, and has been proven not to impact, the existing NATO standard STANAG 3838 or Mil-Std-1553B signaling, which is often running at maximum utilization.
“In these very austere budgeting times, being able to reduce the cost to modernize weapons systems by 60% or more is viewed by our international customers as critical to the future modernization of their weapons systems,” said Duane Anderson, President of Edgewater Computer Systems. “Not only has it been our experience in Canada, but also the experience of our international customers that Extended 1553 dramatically reduces the cost to add planned data-centric capabilities while enabling the delivery of those capabilities to theatre much more rapidly.”
Standardization of Extended 1553 is underway through the NATO Standardization Agency (NSA) as the Broadband Real-time Data Bus Standard (B-RTDB), STANAG 7221 Study. The CANIC circuit card will be the first airworthy certified NIC compliant with STANAG 7221.
Edgewater is now taking orders for its certifiable E1553® NIC and associated evaluation kits (EVKs).
