Educating African Americans About Prostate Cancer; PHEN Symposiums to Be Held In Cities Across The U.S.
Quincy, MA (PRWEB) April 24, 2017 -- The Prostate Health Education Network, Inc. (PHEN) will host over twenty educational symposiums in cities across the US in partnership with churches in African American communities. These four (4) hour symposiums are led by prostate cancer medical specialists, church leaders and prostate cancer survivors who bring their respective expertise and experiences to the fight against prostate cancer. Attendees will learn about their prostate cancer risk, early detection screening, treatment options, clinical trials and managing survivorship. In addition, each symposium will focus on wives and caregivers with a special appeal for women to attend.
To provide attendees with the most up-to-date information PHEN also partners with industry leaders who develop prostate cancer therapies and treatments. These include Amgen, Astellas, Bayer, Dendreon, Genomic Health, Janssen, CyberKnife and Pfizer.
The symposiums, which are free and open to the public, launch in Raleigh, NC on April 29th at St. Matthew Baptist Church and end in Dallas, TX on October 21st at Hamilton Park United Methodist Church. “There is a prostate cancer crisis in Black America with black men suffering a 130 percent higher death rate than white men from this disease,” says Thomas Farrington, PHEN’s president and founder. “However, the latest government statistics show that the prostate cancer death rate for black men is decreasing faster than for all other men. The education and awareness efforts undertaken over the past decade with our partners is making an impact. We plan to accelerate these efforts to help save more lives because knowledge is the best defense against prostate cancer,” he continues.
