Education Sector Represents Over One-Third Of All Detected Malware-Related Events, According To New Report From NTT Com Security
BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (PRWEB) June 23, 2015 -- Students, faculty and staff beware: education continues to represent more than one-third of all detected malware events during 2014, according to the 2015 Global Threat Intelligence Report (GTIR) from NTT Com Security that analyzed attacks, threats and trends from over six billion attacks last year.
As schools become the host of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), connecting large amounts of users to public networks through a variety of devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones), cyber criminals know to target this vulnerable audience segment, resulting in this sector having the most detected malware-related events. Students and staff use these vulnerable networks to check grades, schedule meetings, log into financial assets, and more, opening up their personally identifiable information to criminals.
“The history of open networks at education institutes has resulted in network architectures where there is usually no strong separation between areas containing sensitive data and untrusted areas where professors, students or visitors can connect,” stated Chris Camejo, director of assessment services for NTT Com Security US. “This makes it more difficult to prevent, detect and respond to attacks. IT officials must develop a strategy that is custom to the BYOD culture that they have embraced.”
The report focused on the changing threat landscape and quantifiable shifts throughout 2014 that altered corporate risk and required re-evaluation of risk posture, which requires organizational security transformation.
Methodology
The GTIR was developed using NTT’s Global Threat Intelligence attack data from the NTT Group companies including NTT Com Security, Solutionary, Dimension Data, NTT Data, NTT R&D and NTT Innovation Institute, Inc. The key findings in the 2015 Global Threat Intelligence Report are a result of the analysis of approximately six billion worldwide, verified attacks over the course of 2014. The data for this report was collected from 16 Security Operations Centers (SOC) and seven R&D centers, and supported by the thousands of NTT security specialists, professionals and researchers from around the world.
