McAlester, Okla. (PRWEB) November 25, 2014 -- The Edwards Law Firm, an Oklahoma auto accident firm, is warning drivers of the dangers of impaired and distracted driving after reports alleged that a fatal bus collision in Oklahoma which killed four Texas softball players may have been caused by inattention and/or drug use.
According to an October 10, 2014 report from Bloomberg News, police found a silver marijuana pipe and a bag containing prescription drugs in the cab of a semi-truck driven by Russell Staley. Staley failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a bus carrying members of a women’s college softball team from North Central Texas College. Four young women were killed in the collision.
Among the drugs discovered in the truck were four prescription substances, including trazodone, sertraline, omeprazole, and simvastatin. Side effects of at least two of these medications include drowsiness. Police have not charged Staley with driving under the influence of any medications.
In addition to concerns about drugs and pharmaceuticals found in the semi-truck, Staley also told police that he was distracted by something in the main cabin at the time of the crash, according to an October 23, 2014 report from Bloomberg. Witnesses reported to Bloomberg that Staley was in a “zombie state” after the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board as well as the state and local police are investigating the accident, but have yet to determine the main cause. Whether the accident was caused by distracted driving, impaired driving, or a combination of other factors, the attorneys at The Edwards Law Firm are reminding all drivers to use caution after taking prescription drugs, and to never drive while impaired.
