EIT Digital Unleashes the Power of Data for Better City Living
Brussels, Belgium (PRWEB) March 16, 2017 -- EIT Digital is developing a FIWARE-based software product for tracking and collecting valuable data in urban settings. The resulting data portfolio could support decision making processes and facilitate the fast delivery of new digital urban services.
Cities and local administrations as well as shops, restaurants and other businesses use many digital devices such as traffic lights, security cameras, sensors and interactive screens. These devices, in addition to their primary purpose, also collect a large amount of information that could be used to provide services to urban citizens. Unfortunately, urban service providers often have trouble coordinating a variety of technical applications and information systems that don’t easily “speak” to one another. It is therefore very difficult to access the valuable city-related data they need.
To solve this problem, EIT Digital and partners* launched an Innovation Activity** called CEDUS (City Enabler for Digital Urban Services) that is developing an app called City Enabler. This technology allows urban services providers to actively collaborate to exploit urban data. City Enabler manages and visualises data to support city managers in their decision-making processes thus facilitating innovative map-based urban services and the creation of new business models for stakeholders to exploit.
City Enabler is fully compliant with OASC (Open & Agile Smart Cities) principles and gathers data from different sources into a single app. It is open to other platforms through standard APIs (Application Program Interface) and does not have vendor or city lock-ins. It is portable and replicable, ensuring independence for vendors and full access to the local digital ecosystem.
City Enabler is currently being piloted in the province of Trento (Italy), the municipality of Málaga (Spain) and the municipality of Rennes (France). In the near future, CEDUS plans to target markets including: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Spain and the US.

CEDUS is one of the 11 Innovation Activities of the Digital Cities Action Line for 2017. This Action Line leverages the digital transformation of the cities through centralised, participative and collaborative interactions between city actors: government, city service providers, industry, and citizens. This transformation enables the deployment of disruptive information, mobility and safety services in the cities.
