El Paso Car Accident Lawyer Michael J. Gopin Comments on Texas Department of Transportation Efforts to Curb Texting and Driving
El Paso, TX (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- Commenting on a report about a state effort to educate drivers about distracted driving risks, Michael J. Gopin of The Law Offices of Michael J. Gopin, a texting accident lawyer in El Paso, said he was pleased to learn that officials are taking action to create safer roads.
News 12 (“Tx-DOT educates drivers about dangers of distracted driving with simulator,” November 26) reported that Texas drivers recently had an opportunity to drive distracted within the safety of a driving simulator. Participants experienced first-hand the dangers of texting while driving, cellphone use, and other distracted driving habits without having to deal with the tragic real life consequences.
The Tx-DOT effort came in response to an alarming rise in traffic fatalities. Texas saw a nine percent increase in distracted driving-related traffic fatalities from 2011 to 2012, according to News 12.
“Fatal accidents involving distracted drivers are at an all-time high in Texas. Our firm stands behind efforts by the Texas Department of Transportation to educate our state’s drivers about the dangers of texting while driving,” said Gopin. “By participating in a simulated distracted driving experience, we hope that drivers are able to see first-hand the serious consequences of such negligent behavior.”
According to News 12, the Tx-DOT’s “distracted driving simulator” is a digitally mounted video screen in front of the driver-side steering wheel of a vehicle. The simulator resembles a video game in appearance but requires drivers to react in real time. Drivers are asked to complete a number of different tasks.
News 12 said that the simulator – which contains a number of potential on-screen distractions and potentially dangerous scenarios – requires drivers to read text messages, talk with passengers, tune their radio and even plug in their cellphone or portable electronic device. News 12 said the Tx-DOT hopes drivers become aware of just how suddenly a road obstacle could appear while completing these seemingly simple tasks.
“It’s no secret that taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds can cause a catastrophic car accident in El Paso or anywhere else throughout the Lone Star State. And statistics have shown that these accidents are on the rise,” said Gopin, a texting accident attorney in El Paso.
Gopin said anyone injured by a distracted driver should seek the advice of legal counsel. An attorney can help pursue compensation and send a message that careless behavior will not be tolerated on Texas roads.
