Elderly urged to look after their health this winter
London (PRWEB UK) 16 December 2013 -- As the temperatures plummet, frail and elderly people are being urged to take precautions such as getting the flu vaccination and keeping warm, to avoid taking a turn for the worse.
NHS figures show a big rise in the number of elderly people admitted to hospital every winter with breathing problems – which are often complications of a common cold or flu. However, health experts believe that prevention and early treatment is key. (http://dexpr.es/1bCJ6Nm)
Omar El-Gohary, Superintendent Pharmacist at ChemistDirect said: “It’s important for anyone in their advanced years to receive a flu jab, if they haven’t done so already, because it reduces the chances of catching the flu and complications such as pneumonia. A separate vaccination is also available for Pneumonia.”
Frail and elderly people are also being urged to seek health advice and treatment at their GP surgery or pharmacy at the first sign of illness, rather than waiting until they need hospital treatment.
El-Gohary added: “Keeping warm is also vital in winter – especially for older people. Wear multiple layers including thermals if necessary and make sure extremities are kept warm to avoid an increase in blood pressure.”
It is important for older people to keep warm, because the body responds differently to the cold as we age. This increases the likelihood of a heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, and breathing difficulties. Of the winter deaths that happen every year, 9 in 10 are older people. (http://bit.ly/1eaTXm9)
“Keeping active – even gentle walking – or if this isn’t possible chair-based exercises, along with a healthy balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables will also help to keep the immune system healthy.”
If anyone is concerned about heating their home, they may be eligible to claim Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300 if they were born on or before July 5, 1952, and can find out more by calling 08459 151515.
Anyone with health concerns should visit their GP or pharmacy.
