2016 Hurricane Predictions

These numbers are a significant increase from 2015 with twice as many major hurricanes forecast compared to what actually materialized in 2015. Two tropical storms reached major hurricane strength in 2015 and two made landfall; Tropical Storm Ana in South Carolina and Tropical Storm Bill along the central Texas coast. Seventy-six direct deaths were caused by that season’s tropical cyclone activity.
The 2015 National Hurricane Center Annual Summary states that the 1981-2010 averages are twelve tropical storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. Three tropical storms are forecast to make landfall in the U.S. this year.
Without exception, forecasters warn the population to be prepared regardless of the forecast or their experience in prior years. The consensus is that it only takes one Hurricane coming ashore to cause a major disaster, and everyone near the Atlantic or Gulf Coast should be prepared.
