Emergency Nurses and Health Care Organizations Honored for Achievements
Naperville, IL (PRWEB) October 25, 2015 -- The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®) presented three awards highlighting extraordinary efforts in promoting the value of the certification process in emergency nursing. The awards were bestowed October 2 during the Certification Recognition Breakfast sponsored by BCEN at the Emergency Nursing 2015 Conference in Orlando.
Diane Branson, RN, CEN, OR-SANE-A, Salem Hospital, Albany, OR, accepted the Distinguished Certified Emergency Nurses (CEN®) Award. From seeking funds to defray the cost of CEN prep courses and materials to ensuring new CENs are listed on the emergency department’s “Hall of Fame,” Branson’s exceptional efforts to promote the value of certification in emergency nursing have increased the number of CENs at Oregon’s busiest emergency department from five to 50.
Kristen Cline, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, SANE-A, Sanford AirMed, a division of Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD, received the Distinguished Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN®) Award. The Award, presented by BCEN and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), recognizes exemplary efforts to promote certification in pediatric emergency nursing. Cline advocated for providing online certification review courses and for books purchased by the department. She implemented a formal method of recognizing certified nurses, which resulted in a photo wall in the ED. Cline is the current “go-to” guide for nurses seeking certification, walking them through the process and providing encouragement along with recommending review materials.
This year, BCEN honored both a large and a small organization for their outstanding contributions toward promoting specialty certification in emergency nursing. The BCEN Honorary Certification Recognition Award was given to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital Emergency Medicine & Trauma Center (EMTC), Indianapolis, IN, and to IU Health Saxony Hospital Emergency Department, Fishers, IN.
Since 2011, the EMTC at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital has increased the percentage of certified nurses from 17% to 32% and boasts the highest percentage of any hospital unit at 47%. The EMTC has created courses, provided study and exam reimbursements and requires certification to be eligible for certain leadership positions.
IU Health Saxony Hospital Emergency Department includes certification in their Career Advancement Program, reimburses exam fees for those who achieve the credential, provides study resources and hosts celebratory banquets for the certified nurses and their families.
