Employment Up in April Over March, Report Says
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 01, 2017 -- Total nonfarm payment employment increased by 211,000 jobs in April, according to preliminary numbers reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, May 5, 2017.
“Employment gains recovered, jumping from 79,000 jobs in March to 211,000 jobs in April,” said Jay Rollins, owner of JobsWeb.com, a leading job website. “However, March’s total nonfarm payroll employment was lower than expected, and 65 percent lower than March 2016. All in all, April 2017 was a strong month with a record-low unemployment rate of 4.4 percent, the lowest in 10 years.”
Employment in the leisure and hospitality supersector increased by 55,000 in April, including an increase of 26,000 jobs in the food services and drinking places subsector. Over the last 12 months, the leisure and hospitality supersector has grown by 304,000 jobs, while the food services and drinking places subsector has added 260,000 jobs.
Financial activities added 19,000 jobs in April, mostly due to gains from the insurance carriers and related activities subsector. Over the last 12 months, the supersector has added 173,000 jobs.
Health care and social assistance added 37,000 jobs in April, with health care accounting for 20,000 jobs, below 2016’s monthly average gain of 32,000 jobs. Social assistance added 17,000 jobs, largely within individual and family services.
Other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, and government, showed little change in April.
