Endometriosis Foundation of America Honors Two Extraordinary Women With New Award
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 04, 2014 -- The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA), founded by Tamer Seckin, MD, and Padma Lakshmi, has established the Harry Reich Award in honor of Dr. Reich’s pioneering work in laparoscopic surgery and his lifetime commitment to perfecting minimally invasive procedures in women’s healthcare. Professor Liselotte Mettler from the University of Kiel and Professor Linda C. Giudice from the University of California, San Francisco will be the first two recipients of this award on March 7th in New York City.
“These two extraordinary women – a surgeon and a scientist whose own seminal work and careers mirror the contributions of Dr. Reich - have improved the lives of thousands of women around the world,” said Dr. Seckin.
Dr. Giudice is professor and chair of the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, is a leader in research on the environmental impacts on reproductive health, and founder of the UCSF Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment (PRHE). She is well-known for her research in the field of endometriosis.
“In addition to working on environmental issues, I also plan to focus on women’s empowerment through fertility education,” said Giudice on taking the role of President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in 2012. “This is an issue I’ve worked on for years, and I believe that we can have an impact here in the United States and around the world. Once you empower women, all other things fall into place: independence, financial security, better education for their children, and so much more.”
Dr. Mettler, a former Olympic medalist in swimming, is recognized worldwide for her incredible experience working with the natives in the jungles of Peru, as well as her pioneer work in laparoscopic surgery in Germany. She worked for over 30 year with Dr. Kurt Semm, who is considered to be the father of laparoscopic surgery. She is also an expert in artificial reproductive technologies for which her teacher, Dr. Robert Edwards, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 2010.
“Drs. Mettler and Giudice are two very different doctors with a very similar cause – to inspire, encourage and embolden women to take charge of their health,” said Mady Schuman, executive director of the EFA.
“It is a great honor to have this award given in my name,” added Dr. Reich, “Drs. Mettler and Giudice are remarkable women.”
Drs. Reich, Mettler and Giudice will be speaking on March 7, 2014 at the EFA’s 5th Annual Medical Conference addressing Politics, Ethics and Controversies in Endometriosis and Women’s Health - a two-day meeting open to both medical professionals and women with endometriosis. The Harry Reich Award will be presented on March 7, 2014 at the Blossom Ball, the EFA’s signature fundraiser.
