ENR California Recognizes HNTB-designed Terminal Expansion as Best Project for 2014
SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) November 20, 2014 -- The San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Building and Airside Expansion Project, designed by HNTB Corporation, has been named as Best Project for Airports/Transit for 2014 by Engineering News-Record California, an industry-leading publication that reports on design and construction.
HNTB provided initial planning, lead architectural and engineering services for the 460,000-square-foot expansion of the San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 West, the first commercial airport terminal in the world to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The project involved adding or renovating 20 gates, designing the airport’s new retail and food atrium, and many other interior enhancements. A related airside expansion included 1.3 million square feet of new aircraft apron and taxiway areas.

Celebrating its grand opening last August, HNTB and a joint venture of Turner Construction, PCL Construction and Flatiron held the design-build contract to deliver the expanded terminal, airside paving and central utility projects.
According to the publication’s website, eligible design and construction projects in 20 categories, ranging from airports to sports/entertainment, were judged by national industry leaders on five criteria: teamwork and overcoming challenges, safety, innovation and industry/community contributions, construction quality and craftsmanship, and functionality of design and aesthetic quality. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony and featured in a regional edition of ENR later this year.
The San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Building and Airside Expansion Project has been honored with more than 40 local, regional and national awards for its innovative design and LEED Platinum certification, including:
• 2014 – American Society of Civil Engineers San Diego Section Project of the Year
• 2014 – American Public Works Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter Award
• 2014 – Design-Build Institute of America National Award of Excellence for Aviation
