ENVIRON Foundation Announces Grant Recipients
Arlington, VA (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- The ENVIRON Foundation recently announced it is funding three not-for-profit organizations undertaking innovative international projects that address important human health and environmental sustainability needs. The projects are a water quality monitoring facility and program in Guatemala; a sustainable fishing program that will help protect Indonesia’s coral reef ecosystems; and a renewable energy project in Kenya.
The University of Rhode Island Chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World has been awarded funding to implement a sustainable water quality monitoring facility and program in San Mateo Ixtatán, Guatemala. Water quality is a serious concern in this impoverished community, which has a water distribution system but no water or wastewater treatment.
Olazul, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, has received funding to help Indonesian communities find new ways to fish and harvest ocean products while promoting marine conservation and renewal and elevating impoverished communities’ living standards. Current fishing practices use cyanide and break corals. Olazul will work in partnership at two Indonesian locations with coastal communities and world-class experts over a two-year period to determine the best new approaches.
Located in Ontario, Canada, the Rotaract Club of Mississauga has been awarded a grant to conduct a pilot program of biogas energy use at 20 homes in the Ithenguri community in central Kenya. A subsidiary of Rotary International, the club is a service organization for those between the ages of 18 and 35. The Rotaract Club of Mississauga has more than 40 members whose professional backgrounds include engineering, medicine and human rights.
Commenting on the grants, Tim Barber, Chairperson of the ENVIRON Foundation Committee, said, “Each of these organizations is undertaking important, innovative work and we are very pleased to support them. Many lives will be positively impacted and the environment will also benefit from their initiatives. The ENVIRON Foundation aims to support programs that rely on proven science, are in the early stages of implementation, and that can be widely replicated.”
