Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) October 25, 2013 -- Methane gas and vapor intrusion experts, Terra-Petra, a national environmental engineering firm with headquarters in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, recently completed the successful design and installation of a SVE (Soil Vapor Extraction) system in Carson, California.
Dan Valdez and Dave Lucero of Terra Petra’s construction division spearheaded the system’s design and construction, and corresponded with the South Coast Air Quality Management District(AQMD) in order to pull all necessary building permits.
In years past this site was the location of a wire coat-hanger manufacturer which contaminated the soil and groundwater with Tetrachloroethylene (PCE), the main contaminant of concern. PCE is a colorless liquid which is a common soil contaminant. Left unmitigated, the vapors from this contaminant can be carcinogenic to humans. Prologis, one of the leading developers of industrial real estate worldwide, owns a building on the site which is utilized as an industrial machine manufacturing facility. The company wanted to address the vapor intrusion issues immediately and contacted Terra-Petra for its expertise in this field.
Terra-Petra’s scope of work began with pulling all AQMD Permits, including various Form 400s pertaining to the California Environmental Quality Act applicability, and gaseous emission control information. The construction team saw-cut the floors where the trenches were to be located and removed all soils for proper disposal. All spoils were continuously monitored per AQMD Rule 1166.1, and soil samples were sent to laboratories for testing. After testing, Terra-Petra began the installation of the SVE system. The system included a 20 mil. Vapor Barrier placed beneath the concrete and Vapor Pins through the concrete slab at 8 locations. In accordance with the requirements of an active venting system, Terra-Petra installed the Geotech SVE system and Air Fan Exhaust System to collect and dispose of potential vapors.
Terra-Petra’s extensive experience in soil vapor extraction led to an expedited design and installation process. Prologis reports that the site now has a fully-functional active venting system to protect occupants.
