New York City, NY (PRWEB) November 25, 2013 -- eReflect company, developer of 7 Speed Reading™ software, has published a post on the company's product website discussing information recently released by Bowker Market Research on the benefits e-books offer today. According to the study, the research organization found that self-published e-books now account for about 12% of the total digital publishing market.
Bowker is a ProQuest group that supplies book information to libraries, booksellers and publishers and serves as the official U.S. agency for identifying ISBN numbers. This recent study on self-published books, both digital and print, finds that there are now over 235,000 self-published books, which is almost a threefold increase over the last six years.
In the very early days of book publishing, all books were "self-published," and authors had few resources for publishing assistance. As publishing houses grew, however, agents began to get involved and authors also began selling manuscripts to publishers for a fixed price, rather than receiving money from the actual sales. As more authors wanted to be in print, publishers became selective about what they would buy and promote, and this has left many modern-day authors forced to pay for the printing of a book release in hopes it will sell.
Changes in technology have once again changed the publishing industry, as evidenced by Bowker's latest survey. The group found that self-published e-books now account for 12% of the total number of new books, although this number rises to 20% in some genres, particularly crime, sci-fi, humor, fantasy and romance.
Their research also determined that heavy readers are more likely than average readers to purchase self-published books. 61% of people who buy self-published books tend to read daily, compared to just 37% of all book buyers.
As technology changes, more people are turning to e-reading devices like the Amazon Kindle, rather than relying on print publications. The availability of such devices has caused the popularity of e-reading to soar over the last few years, explained a team member from eReflect. The company's 7 Speed Reading software was designed to help readers save effort and time while reading news and other material, although the developers believe users can master this skill more readily through hands-on experience with a range of material.
While more people are turning to e-readers and e-books, the cost of buying e-books may deter many avid readers. The eReflect team noted that availability and cost is no longer the issue it once was, as many free resources are available today, particularly from self-published authors.
One of the most popular features of 7 Speed Reading software is the fact that it includes hundreds of e-books that are already integrated into the software. The team hopes that readers will take advantage of this to practice reading and learn how to read faster by choosing their favorite books from this massive collection.
