Etymotic Research Amps Up Hearing Protection Program For Summer

From concert festivals to formal summer music programs to jamming with friends or even listening to portable devices while enjoying the great outdoors, summer can mean increased exposure to unsafe sound levels.
Therefore, Etymotic Research has chosen this moment to highlight the critical importance of hearing protection, and in particular, its Adopt-a-Band program. Adopt-a-Band promotes awareness among young musicians, music educators and parents about the importance of protecting hearing. The program is easy to join. Sound exposure can also reach dangerous levels at band camp, especially when factoring in the time students and instructors are exposed. Rehearsals are often indoors, and can go on for hours a day, every day, over the length of the program. That means considerably more time exposed to sound than a student would experience in school, and over a shorter period of time.
And think about programs such as drum corps—where most of the rehearsals and performances are outdoors. These groups can include over 100 members and play music that’s loud enough to fill a football stadium. In fact, a large drum corps or marching band can generate over 120 dB of sound—which is a safe listening level for about seven seconds.
“Even if kids are outside, one’s own instrument can still be loud enough to cause damage,” adds Charlene Clements, coordinator of Etymotic’s Adopt-a-Band program. “If they wear earplugs, kids won’t be as fatigued, and when worn properly, the earplugs can actually improve the sound they’re hearing. Plus, wearing earplugs over the summer helps develop healthy hearing habits for the rest of the year.”
