EU Aviation Strategy: SAE International Welcomes an Ambitious Package and EASA's Shift Towards a Performance-based Approach
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- Following the publication of the “Aviation Package” on 07th December, SAE International welcomes the Communication from the European Commission on the future of European aerospace sector: “An Aviation Strategy for Europe” .
SAE International believes that Europe should continue to play a lead role in partnership with other world regions towards a safer, efficient and more sustainable international aviation system.
In that respect, the revision of EASA basic Regulation (EC) 2016/2008 and the proposed shift towards a “risk and performance based approach to safety regulation and oversight” will contribute to making the European certification system more efficient while ensuring an equivalent level of safety and allowing a swifter introduction of emerging technologies.
As underlined by the European Commission, SAE International, with its EU industry constituency at governing and technical levels, believes that “there is also room for a greater reliance on recognised industry standards. Ultimately this will provide more regulatory flexibility, while achieving the same or higher level of safety overall.”
Global partnership, including common industry standardisation, fosters the aeronautics industry competitiveness by providing guidance for certification and thus shortening time-to-market and facilitates global trade and the export market.
In identified EU priority fields such as drones or cybersecurity but also training, SAE International would like to offer the Commission and EASA its technical support and global experience.
SAE International shares the views of the Commission and its intention to pursue the objective “to promote consumer interests, reduce barriers to trade, maintain a level playing field for operators, foster innovation, maintain the highest levels of safety and involve all stakeholders in the process”.
SAE International looks forward to continued discussions and collaboration with the EU institutions and the various industry players.
SAE International is a global association committed to being the ultimate knowledge source for the engineering profession. By uniting over 137,000 engineers and technical experts, we drive knowledge and expertise across a broad spectrum of industries. We act on two priorities: encouraging a lifetime of learning for mobility engineering professionals and setting the standards for industry engineering.
Since its foundation in 1905, and in addition to engineering education and symposia, SAE has developed the largest global aerospace industry standards programme (+,8,500 active standards, recommended practice and reports published for the aerospace industry) and its standards are referenced in global aviation regulations including those of EASA, FAA and ICAO.
SAE offers expert technical resources developed by engineers for engineers (+1,700 European volunteer engineers sit on 140 SAE aerospace technical committees with their peers from around the world)
