EverSpark Comments How Snapchat's Story Is Not Over Yet
(PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- Snapchat stunned the startup world when it turned down a unrivaled $3 billion buyout offer this month. Social media expert Denae Olberding of EverSpark Interactive says the company made a smart move.
The bid, which came from competitor Facebook, has promoted controversy in the tech world according to CNN (11.14.2013). Facebook is known for saving and mining its users' data, while Snapchat has built its allure on privacy.
"Snapchat is the complete opposite of Facebook's save-it-forever approach,” said Olberding, who handles social media campaigning for EverSpark's clients.
But turning down the offer was more than just an ideological stand, according to Olberding.
“Everyone thinks they made this foolish move and missed their big break,” she said. “They're not missing anything. They're sitting on the next Instagram.”
Instagram (also bought by Facebook) is a rival image-sharing app, but one that focuses on public sharing.
“Users are sick of constantly curating their lives,” Olberding said.
The app has found a much wider user base, which Olberding describes as, “mostly young people having fun.”
“In a lot of ways Snapchat is better than privacy,” Olberding said.
“Facebook wouldn't have offered so much if they didn't see that this is a serious competitor,” she said. “Snapchat turned the offer down because they're still getting bigger.”
