The Excellence in Fibers exhibition and Collector’s Issue flip book reflect the core mission of Fiber Art Now to support fiber artists and integrate fiber arts, textiles, and mixed media into more galleries, museums, homes, and public settings. Excellence in Fibers intends to expand artist opportunities far beyond the small number of visitors who would be exposed to their work in a museum or gallery and will introduce the work to directly viewers, gallerists, directors, buyers, and collectors. .
Paul J. Smith reflects on the history of fiber arts, “During the mid 20th Century a small group of pioneering artists both in the US and abroad inspired by the rich historical textile traditions began to explore new concepts that became identified as fiber art. That focus continues and today there is a much larger community and many new emerging artists who are creating unique personal expressions that go beyond classic formats, and sometimes employ new technology to create a broadened range of forms from installations to performance works.”
The Excellence in Fibers exhibition will highlight the exciting work being created in fiber arts, textiles, and mixed media. The juror group includes John Hopper, David Revere McFadden, Jane Sauer, and Lena Vigna. Their collective experience frames the history of fiber arts and textiles. They have associations with the Museum of Art and Design, New York; Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin; Jane Sauer Gallery, New Mexico; and The Textile Blog of the United Kingdom, amongst many other respected organizations. According to juror, Jane Sauer, artist, gallery owner, curator and advocate, “The contemporary fiber arts movement has reached a more mature phase. Artists from many disciplines are borrowing our techniques and materials and including them in their art practices.” Sauer's sentiments about fiber arts are synonymous with the passion of the Fiber Art Now magazine and community. Fiber artists in every media are encouraged to submit their work. The deadline is October 1, 2015.
