This sermon was originally delivered during the height of the American Civil Rights Movement on May 29, 1966, just two short years before his untimely assassination in 1968. Dr. King’s exhortation on Luke 4 was given to Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. This sermon reaffirms the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as an instrumental voice in American Civil Rights history and gospel proclamation as he calls the Church to confront the issues of broken heartedness, poverty, and to preach the year of the Lord. Dr. King challenges the Church to return the cross of Christ, even amid the hatred, violence, and segregation of his time. Dr. King reminds his listeners that it is not an easy task, because as a result of “confronting the day-to-day problems that go along with our living of life we end up with broken hearts.” However, Dr. King also beckons his listeners toward perseverance and hope proclaiming, “It’s dark now. It’s dismal now. But morning will surely come.”
