Experienced IT Professional Offers Advice to Land Jobs in a Slow IT Job Market
Mount Laurel, NJ (PRWEB) February 27, 2015 -- This year, graduates looking to enter the IT industry will face a more difficult time finding a job compared to graduates in other fields. The reason? The IT industry is growing at a slower rate than other industries in the U.S., according to Fierce CIO. Despite the creation of 119,000 new IT jobs in the first half of 2014, the IT sector is growing at 1.9% which is well below the 3.5% job growth in other industries.
The job market is tough, but there are still job opportunities and different ways to break into the industry. According to Vincent Luciani, eastern district director of Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) and the chief information officer of InterActiveCorp (IAC), graduates and students who are seeking a career in IT should seek opportunities to intern and network.
“Students enrolled in college and recent graduates should find an internship to start. Almost every IT company offers internships and the experience is invaluable. When it comes to a full-time position, hiring managers tend to select candidates with internship experience over those without it,” said Luciani.
However, the internship is only the first step of many to attain a full-time position. Connecting to other individuals in the industry will open up even more opportunities for young professionals.
“Networking is key. People get as much out of networking as they put in. It’s important to join organizations with resources and information, like AITP, that can connect you to people. Get involved with and talk to people in the industry and it will do wonders for your career,” said Luciani. “I volunteer because of the people who volunteered and helped to get me where I am today. Your career relates to the people you meet along the way.”
