This is the second year that TZMI has published the annual review suite, apart from the TiO2 Pigment Annual Review which has been published since 2010. The publications all follow a generally similar format, with comprehensive analysis of the relevant sectors, reviewing the 2012 year, as well as providing insight into the titanium and zircon value chains.
All of the annual reviews contain supply and demand analysis and interpretation sourced from TZMI’s extensive database as well as producer profiles, and, in the case of the titanium feedstock and zircon sectors, profiles of new projects.
The Titanium Feedstock Annual Review provides extensive coverage of events and developments within the sector during 2012, as well as TZMI analysis of the supply and demand dynamics during 2012 and outlook in the next few years.
Globally, there are only a small number of large mining companies or groups involved in the production of titanium feedstocks, and these are dominated by close relationships between producers (miners) and consumers (predominately pigment producers). In 2012, the sector bore the brunt of slowing demand throughout the value chain as well as a number of strategic moves within the industry to curtail costs and maintain security of supply. TZMI investigates the impact of the changes to the supply/demand balance and provides insight into what lies ahead for the industry.
The TiO2 Pigment Annual Review is dedicated to the US$16.2 billion global TiO2 pigment market. The objective of the TiO2 Pigment Annual Review is to provide a detailed overview of the previous year’s TiO2 pigment industry and an outlook that is suitable for current participants and those without prior exposure to the sector. This publication combines information from TZMI’s extensive database, interpretation and analysis of the TiO2 pigment sector with historical and technical references.
The TiO2 pigment sector is dominated by large multinational corporations operating multiple plants in numerous countries. Five global producers provided close to 52% of the global nameplate capacity in 2012: DuPont, Cristal Global, Tronox, Huntsman and Kronos. China’s production base has grown substantially and now accounts for 32% of global capacity.
The Zircon Annual Review 2013 examines the sector on a number of different levels, by primary producers and intermediate/end-user groupings. The global zircon market is best separated into categories by end-use, with the ceramics industry the major driver for zircon demand.
The main primary producers are in just two countries, both in the southern hemisphere – Australia and South Africa – while the intermediate processors and end-users are mainly concentrated in the northern hemisphere, in China, Spain, Italy, the US and Germany.
The titanium metal sector is one of the most fragmented markets to be evaluated by TZMI.
The Titanium Metal Annual Review 2013 examines events and developments within the global titanium metal sector during 2012, encompassing its multiple segments.
These include (in terms of contained titanium value):
• the US$110 million titanium feedstock industry
• the US$2.94 billion titanium sponge group
• the US$5.41 billion milled products market
The world’s top 11 titanium feedstock producers provide approximately 75% of annual global output to the entire supply chain, with only approximately 6% of this actually used in titanium metal manufacture.
Where appropriate, TZMI includes its own forecasts for key data. However, since the annual reviews are produced at a single point in the year, such forecasts should not necessarily be considered the most up-to-date data available from TZMI. Facts contained within the annual reviews are drawn from TZMI’s substantial and detailed database, and these publications reflect summations of the information contained therein.
